Background summary
This is a randomised controlled trial of home automation plus care as usual versus care as usual for people with severe mental illness in community mental health teams. In the experimental condition clients will get a digital communication device. This opens the possibility for the following services:
1. Regular / crisis consultation via webcam;
2. Computerized information about treatment plans, lab results, reminders and scheduled appointments
3. Support by significant others: clients can have webcam contact with family members or other significant contacts.
The experimental services are thought to have advantages in terms of better availability of services, better treatment information, and social support but might also have disadvantages in terms of inactivity and dependency on service providers.
Objective of the study is to assess the effects of home automation on client satisfaction with services, functioning, fulfillment of needs for care, quality of life, and service contacts.
