Outcome measures
Primary outcome
To investigate energy and protein intake in general wards during the post intensive care period [expressed in kilocalories and grams per day and per kilogram bodyweight, adjusted for overweight, and as a percentage of calculated targets [%], averaged over the study days].
Secondary outcome
-To assess differences in energy and protein intake between patients on oral, enteral, parenteral or combined nutrition; expressed in kilocalories and grams per day and per kilogram bodyweight, and as a percentage of calculated targets [%];
-To assess differences in energy and protein intake after feeding tube removal expressed in kilocalories and grams per day and per kilogram bodyweight, and as a percentage of calculated targets [%];
-To assess differences in energy and protein intake between wards of different specialisms expressed in kilocalories and grams per day and per kilogram bodyweight, and as a percentage of calculated targets [%];
-To assess hospital LOS [in days] and mortality [%] (both after ICU discharge) in relation with energy and protein targets reached.
Background summary
Nutrition plays a key role in the recovery of critically ill patients. However, relevant information regarding nutritional intake in the post-ICU hospitalization period is scarce. Moreover, the few studies that have investigated nutritional intake in the post-ICU hospitalization period, assessed energy and protein intake using food record charts.
In our hospital, meals are ordered via At Your Request - a hospital meal service concept by Sodexo with a restaurant style menu card and room service.
In this prospective observational cohort study, we aim to describe a detailed and complete overview of energy and protein intake in the post-ICU period. Digital photography will be used to assess leftovers of ordered meals and compare this to what has been ordered by At Your Request. Secondary study parameters are the differences in reached targets between patients on oral, enteral, parenteral or combined nutrition and the differences between hospital wards.
In addition to this, the food order databases of 150 additional patients will be assessed retrospectively to compare dietitian (supplementary) prescriptions with nutritional values of food that has actually been ordered via At Your Request.
Study objective
In the post-ICU hospitalization, the nutritional intake of post-ICU patients is below targets (based on predicted requirements)
