Pain score reduction

PONV, pruritis, patient satisfaction, time to mobilisation, length of stay, incidence of complications, possibly patient related outcomes measures.
Background summary
We aim to examine pain relief and side effects in patients undergoing hip arthroplasty under spinal anaesthesia. Control group is current practice, which is low dose (100-150mcg) intrathecal morphine. Intervention is the pericapsular nerve block, a novel regional technique. This shall be combined with a spinal anaesthesia with bupivicaine and no intrathecal morphine.
Study objective
The PENG hip block is superior to low dose intrathecal morphine and features less side effects
Study design
Pre-operative, intraoperative, postoperative Recovery unit, day1 postop, day 2 postop, day 3 postop, discharge
Intervention
1. Low dose intrathecal morphine via spinal anaesthesia, 2. pericapsular nerve group block with spinal anaesthesia
Inclusion criteria
All hip arthroplasty patients for surgery at Noarlunga Hospital or Flinders Medical Centre with no contraindication to either spinal anaesthesia with intrathecal morphine or ropivicaine based regional technique
Exclusion criteria
Contraindication to spinal anaesthesia. Patient refusal, allergy or contraindication to intrathecal morphine or regional analgesia
