Background summary
14% of Dutch children are diagnosed with a chronic disease. These children report a decreased quality of life due to problems in common well-being and physical functioning. They feel restricted in sports participation and physical functioning. Most chronic ill children have lower levels of daily physical activity and lower exercise capacity as their peers. In this study, we first measure the daily physical activity levels, exercise capacity, muscle strength, quality of life, fear of exercise, disease activity and body composition in 4 groups of chronically ill children. The diseases that are included in this study are; Pompe's disease, Fontan circulation, Broncho Pulmonary Dysplasia, and Inflammatory bowel disease.
After the first measurements, all children will participate in a tailored exercise program. This program will last for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks all measurements will be repeated to measure the effects of the training.
Study objective
Training in children with a chronic illness will increase physical functioning, physical activity levels and quality of life.
