Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Executive functions. The following subtests of the CANTAB will used:
Stockings of Cambridge
Spatial Working Memory
Stop Signal Task
Intra-Extra Dimensional Set-Shift
Choice Reaction Time
Cambridge Gambling Task
Physical Activity. The Actical Z (Philips Respironics) will be used to assess activity levels of the prisoners. A suitable method of data analysis will be chosen at a later time, as new (improved) validated regression models are occasionally published (e.g. Crouter et al., 2008 & 2011).
Secondary outcome
The following questionnaires are used as secondary outcome measures:
SCL-90-R
MINI
WAIS (subtests Information and Block Design)
IPAQ
Study objective
Prisoners' executive functions decline after 3 months of imprisonment
Study design
The first assessment is aimed to take place within 7 days of imprisonment, with a maximum of 10 days. The second assessment takes places approximately 3 months after the first assessment.
Intervention
This is an observational study, in which the influence of the (impoversished) prison environment on executive functions is observed.
