Part 1:
Psychiatric diagnoses
Part 2:
Localisation of increased brain activity during auditory verbal hallucinations
Background summary
Auditory verbal hallucinations are rather common and occur in a wide variety of
psychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia and personality disorders. It is
currently unclear whether auditory verbal hallucinations in these conditions
are the same, since both similarities and differences haven been described in
several studies with small sample sizes. The development of auditory verbal
hallucinations in patients with personality disorders is unknown. Knowledge on
the content, impact and development of auditory verbal hallucinations in
patients with personality disorders may provide insight in the underlying
biological mechanism. Futhermore, a possible underlying mechanism may help to
predict responses to therapeutic interventions that are originally developed
for schizophrenic auditory verbal hallucinations, such as medication or
cognitive therapy.
Study objective
To obtain knowledge on the content, impact and development of auditory verbal
hallucinations in patients with personality disorders.
Study design
Part 1:
a. A structured psychiatric interview will be obtained to confirm the diagnosis.
b. Auditory verbal hallucinations will be described in detail using several
structured questionnaires
c. A blood sample of 20ml will be collected of each participant for genetic
analysis.
Part 2:
A part of the population will participate in the second part of the study, in
which an EEG will be performed in order to find the brain activity at the onset
of auditory verbal hallucinations.
Study burden and risks
There are no known associated risks of the venous puncture and EEG.
