Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Prevalence of parasitic infections detected by multiplex PCR or schistosomal
serology
Secondary outcome
Possible risk factors identifying those who are carrying parasites
Secondary infections in close contacts with Entamoeba histolytica
Costs per detected case of asymptomatic infection
Background summary
Potentially serious asymptomatic infection is common in travellers. Multiplex
real-time polymerase chain reaction (pcr) offers the possibility to screen
returning travellers for asymptomatic parasitic infections which may lead to
serious disease many years after return.
Study objective
To determine the usefulness of multiplex real-time pcr to detect asymptomatic
parasitic infections in travellers returning from the tropics.
Study design
Prospective study. A structured questionnaire on travel history, complaints and
medication and stool samples are collected before travel, and 2 weeks and 8
weeks after return. Schistosomal serology is performed for those returning from
Africa.
Study burden and risks
