Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Patient survey (baseline plus annual follow-up):
* Demographic information (age, level of education, etc.)
* Medical history
* Risk factors for osteoporosis-related fracture
* New fractures
* Self-report of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis
* Other medications and treatments
* Type of osteoporosis treatment ordered as reported by patient
* Osteoporosis treatment use and compliance
* Health and functional status
Secondary outcome

Background summary
Factors associated with increased risk of osteoporotic fractures are well
documented. A number of interventions have been shown to lower fracture risk.
Despite ample evidence that fracture rates can be reduced, implementation of
effective prevention practice lags. Data suggests that many individuals at
substantial risk are not being identified and treated. Also, little is know in
which way practice patterns influence care of patients at risk for
osteoporosis-related fragility fractures.
Study objective
The goal of this research is to improve our understanding of the risk and
prevention of osteoporosis-related fractures among female residents of 9
countries who are 55 years of age and older.
Research Objectives
* Describe the distribution of risk factors for osteoporosis-related fracture
* Identify differences in physician diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis
* Characterize factors that influence patient compliance with treatment
* Assess the real-world effectiveness of treatment on the incidence of fracture
* Evaluate the cost effectiveness of interventions for the prevention and
treatment of osteoporosis from the perspective of the healthcare provider
Study design
International, observational, longitudinal study collecting patient
self-reports on risk factors, treatment and control of osteoporosis related
fractures in women 55 years of age and older.
Specific questions which will address each of these major areas will be
answered using descriptive cross-sectional analyses, predictive correlational
analyses, and economic analysis
Study burden and risks
Burden: completing a 30 minutes-questionnaire at home
