Background summary
Competency is a complex term. It is relevant in many professions, but very much
so in psychiatry. However, to determine whether someone is in fact competent is
not easy and is not standardised at all.
In teh United States an instrument has been developed to determine the degree
of ceompetency. It has been tested on psychiatric patients and has good
psychometric properties.
In Teh Netherlands it has never been used or validated. This current research
tries te make a start with this.
Study objective
To investigate whether the use of this instrument can make the determination of
competency more objective and better.
Study design
Fifteen patients will be interviewed. The result of the interview with the
instrument and the opinion of the psychiatrist will be compared.
Some other tests will also be done, mainly for seriousness of the illness
(BPRS, HDRS, MMSE) and a short intelligence test.
Study burden and risks
Low risk, 2 or 3 intervies of 30-45 minutes.
