Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The decisional conflict of both groups are compared and within both group the
difference is measured before and after counselling.
Secondary outcome
The difference in decisional conflict between different patientgroups.
The influence of visualisation of information upon understanding and
participation.
Background summary
There are several protocols for assessment and therapy in youth mental health
care, but not for counselling. A standarised procedure for counselling can
support caregivers to use methods that are beneficial for a positive outcome.
Study objective
This study aims at a evidence based, legally aproved, standarised professional
procedure, which is useable in daily practice to give counselling in youth
mental health care about assessment and therapy and to stimulate shared
decision making.
Study design
A randomised controlled trial is done comparing the standarised way of
counselling versus care as usual in two centers of youth mental health care. 80
cases will be included. The counselling of parents of children (under 12 year
of age) who are regularely assessed in this centers will be examined. The so
called decisional conflict (a construct of The Ottowa Decision Support
Framework* (ODSF)) is measured of both the parents and the caregivers. This
ODSF is a conceptual framework for studying interventions aimed at shared
decision making. The scales used are being validated for the Dutch situation as
well.
Intervention
The intervention concerns a standarised way of counselling in youth mental care
health. This procedure is based upon a study of research, a survey amongst
Dutch centers of youth mental care and the outcome of an expert-panel
(Delphi-study).
Study burden and risks
Burden is limited to completing the scales.
No riscs are expected.
