Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Activity on the EMG of the pelvic floor muscles.
Secondary outcome
Relation between emotion induction and pelvic floor activity.
Background summary
The male pelvic floor has not been subject of many studies, in comparison with
the female pelvic floor. In men studies have been done on treatment of urinary
incontinence after radical prostatectomy, in case of erectiele dysfunction and
in patients with urogenital pain. The behaviour of the male pelvic floor under
influence of emotions has never been assessed. A study in female patients has
shown a respons of the pelvic floor muscles on emotion induction.
Study objective
The objective of this study is to assess the activity of the pelvic floor
muscles during emotion induction, in men with complaints of overactive pelvic
floor muscles. The activity is measured during viewing of emotion inducing film
excerpts. The results can be used in choosing the most appropriate therapy.
Study design
A pilot study, in which EMG registration is used to measure the activity of the
pelvic flor muscles when watching emotion inducing film excerpts.
Study burden and risks
The burden for the patient is the application of the anal probe to measure the
EMG. They have to watch four emotion inducing film excerpts.
