Background summary
The number of ageing people with intellectual disabilities in this group will
increase substantially during the next decades, but ageing in this group is
often not a healthy ageing. However, epidemiological information is
internationally hardly available. For this research project, the following
specific subthemes have been chosen: 1. Mobility and Fitness; 2. Nutrition and
Nutritional State; 3. Mood, Anxiety and Cognition. These themes have a strong
mutual relationship, and a negative influence on health and quality of life,
but they have hardly been studied in ageing people with intellectual
disabilities.
Study objective
1. To perform for each subtheme baseline assessments of several
health-associated aspects of ageing: prevalences of (age-related) diseases,
prevalences of risk factors and secondary health effects 2. To assess mutual
relationships between the subthemes.
Study design
Study design: Observational cross-sectional epidemiological study.
Study burden and risks
Participants will be studied in two consecutive weeks. During these two weeks,
they will wear an actiwatch and a step-counter. In this two weeks they will
undergo on three different occasions some physical fitness tests, once a
physical examination, once a structured observation of swallowing is done, once
an interview about depression, anxiety and quality of life, and a blood sample
is taken (only for participants who specifically agreed to this). When a
participant is not able of answering the questions of the interview, the
interview is done with the key informant. Secondary diagnostic assessment is
done when there is an indication for depression, anxiety or dementia. In case
of a diagnosis, the participant will be referred to regular health care.
Most of the measurements are similar to regular diagnostic activities
participants are used to do regularly. The risks associated with participation
are therefore not significantly higher. One of the fitness tests asks for a
submaximal effort, therefore the risks of adverse events is also minimal.
Specific knowledge about ageing in people with intellectual disabilities
enhances the possibilities and quality of diagnostics and treatment, so health
en quality of life can be improved.
