Background summary
A "winging" scapula, or scapula alata, is the result of a malfunction of one or
multiple musclegroups which in a healthy condition maintain the scapula to the
thorax during arm elevation. This results in a winging scupula which is
possibly accompanied by pain and limitation in maximal arm elevation. A
transfer of the pectoralis major tendon seems to be an suitable procedure in
terms of pain relief and regaining arm function.
For the operative procedure the insertion of the pectoralis major is detached
from the upper arm and reattached to the angulus inferior of the scapula. The
intention is that the transfer results in an active stabilisation of the
scapula.
Study objective
Objective is to monitor muscle function before and after a solitary transfer of
the pectoralis major for patients suffering a winged scapula. Clinical results,
assessed in terms of pain experience, maximal Range of Motion, arm force and
arm function, are related to the observe muscle function.
Study design
single cohort test-retest.
Study burden and risks
small change of overload injuries of the shoulder
