Outcome measures
Primary outcome
This is a qualitative study, which has no primary outcomevariables.
In the focus-group interviews adolescents will be asked to talk about the
influence of the pain on daily activities, the coping with the pain and the
activities they avoid doing. Finally we want to gain insight in the disabling
activities, cognitions and fears.
Secondary outcome

Background summary
Non-specific chronic pain in adolescents is a common problem. Chronic pain can
have negative consequences on the development, the quality of life of the
adolescent and an increased risk of pain as an adult. The extent that pain in
adolescents also is experienced as disabling is definite by several factors. In
adolescents similar to a substantial part of adults with chronic pain, pain
related fear seems to play an important role in the level of experienced
disability. The situations in which the adolescents experience disability in
their daily life are known. However, there is little known about their own
experiences and perceptions of living with chronic pain and its relation to the
disability.
Study objective
The aim of this study is to gather insights in experiences and perceptions
related to daily activities in adolescents with musculoskeletal chronic pain.
Attention will be paid to anxiety and catastrophizing thoughts about pain and
its consequences.
Study design
This is a cross-sectional qualitative study. To gain insights about living with
pain in the perspective of the adolescent semi-structural focus-group
interviews will be conducted. The adolescents will be asked to take some photos
of activities, situations or movements that are influenced by pain. These
photos will be used as a support to the interview.
Study burden and risks
Participation does not involve any risk. The adolescents with chronic pain will
be asked to participate as *hands-on* experts. Participation in this study will
contribute to important insights in experiences, thoughts and related
disability in adolescents with chronic pain. The results of this study will be
used in the further development of a screening questionnaire and measurement
instrument in adolescents with chronic pain. The only burden related to this
study is a time investment to fill in a questionnaire, to make photographs and
to participate in the focus-group interview. The focus-group interview will be
held at Maastricht University. The total time investment will approximately be
2.5 hours.
