Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Length of the small and large intestine.
Secondary outcome
Evaluation of height and the corresponding formulas as the best predictor for
small and large intestinal length in children.
Background summary
Quantifying intestinal length is important in the prognosis of short bowel
syndrome. Until now, existing data on pediatric intestinal length are limited
because most studies report postmortem values.
Study objective
To validate previously established norms for intestinal length in children and
to validate height as the best predictor of small intestinal and colon length.
Study design
Monocenter, prospective cohort study.
Study burden and risks
Subjects will have no direct benefits of participating in this study. We would
like to validate previously established norms for intestinal length and
evaluate height as the best predictor in a multicenter approach.
No adverse events have been reported while performing the previous study. The
expected burden for the participants is very low, only operating time could be
minimally prolonged, however measuring the intestine is considered standard of
care.
