Background summary
Parasitic, bacterial and viral infections play an important role in the
aetiology of gastroenteritis in non-human primates (NHP). A recent study in NHP
of Belgian and Dutch zoo*s showed that particularly protozoan infections as
Entamoeba and Giardia were found. Next to the clinical relevance of these
intestinal protozoa for the NHP there is a possibility of infection of the
animal keepers. A systematic study on the prevalence of intestinal protozoa in
animal keepers using specific and sensitive detection techniques and DNA based
identification will provide an important insight on the infections risks in
animal keepers and development of preventive measures.
Study objective
Study of zoonotic protozoan infection in animal keepers. The findings will
provide data which can be used to design better health polici for NHP and
animal keepers.
Study design
cross-sectional study
Study burden and risks
Animal keepers will be asked to provide one stool sample for parasitological
examination. Participation does not withold any risks.
