Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Assessment of a risk profile according to the guideline *Cardiovasculair
risicomanagement (2006)'.
Secondary outcome
Inventory (incidence) and characteristics of known and emerging risk-factors
for cardiovascular disease in a high-risk popluation.
Background summary
Individuals of Asian descent are at high risk to develop cardiovascular
disease. The absolute risk is estimated 2-fold higher compared to Caucasians.
In the Netherlands this seems to apply to Hindostani indviduals. As it is
reasonable to assume that primary prevention may reduce morbidity and mortality
in this high-risk population. Therefore the dept of Cardiology of Maasstad
Ziekenhuis has initiated an out-patient prevention clinic for this population
to perform a screening and give advice. The screening will be performed in a
standardised way making the data suitable for analyses that may help to further
elucidate the underlying pathogenesis. The participants will also be offered to
participate in an optional part that also aims to further elucidate the
underlying pathogenesis.
Study objective
Primary: provide individual subjects with a cardiovascular risk profile and
(when indicated) an advice to prevent cardiovascular disease.
Secondary: collect data on the subject in a uniform and standardised manner
that may help to to further elucidate the underlying pathogenesis.
Study design
Open exploratory study
Study burden and risks
The burden and risks associated with a screening are considered to be of
minimal risk and burden. The potential benefit - early detection and treatment
- is substantial. Please note that the target population is well aware that
they belong to a high-rsik population and appreciate this initiative.
De burden/risk associated with the optional investigations (a venpuncture for a
50 ml blood draw and a non-invasive assessment of vascular function that
includes a 5-min period of arterial occlusion) are considered negligible.
