Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Independent variable is diagnose: either ASS or PS. Dependent variables are
emotional intelligence scores measured by EQI and MSCEIT tasks.
Secondary outcome
(Cognitive) Intelligence by Dutch Reading test for Adults (NLV) and scores on
neuropsychological tasks.
Background summary
The differential diagnosis of disorders is needed to come to the right
indication and treatment of patients (in mental health). The differential
diagnosis of autism spectrum disorders (ASS) and personality disorders (PS) can
be complex, especially when the ASS is subtle and the PS is more invalidating.
Tests are needed to find the right diagnosis. With both disorders problems are
present with social interaction. To be able to interact socially you need
emotional cognition. This information is developed during years in life and it
helps to create empathy. ASS is said to develop during childhood or earlier/PS
is said to develop during adolescence/early adulthood. So you could say people
with ASS have less opportunities to develop emotional cognition than people
with PS. De hypothesis is people with ASS score less good in emotional
intelligence than people with PS. Both have problems so won't score as good as
the "norm-testscores" would expect. We also expect people with ASS to score
less on executive tasks because of the social emotional aspect on those
tasks.
Study objective
By measuring emotional intelligence facilitate the differential diagnosis of
autism spectrum disorders and personality disorders.
Study design
Quasi-experimental (comparative) design that explores which differences are
present between a group of patients with ASS and a group of patients with PS,
looking at emotional intelligence.
Study burden and risks
See the research protocol. 1 daypart patients are tested. They are all in
treatment with the GGZ Groep Noord- en Midden Limburg. They can contact their
therapist in case the research has consequences like fatique/emotionality.
