Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The primary endpoint is the difference in duration of wakefulness during the
time presumed sleeping between both groups.
Secondary outcome
Secondary endpoints are subjective quality of sleep, depression, delirium as
diagnosed by a psychiatrist, clinical parameters (complications, blood
pressure, heart rate, temperature, pain score), duration of hospitalization,
and medication with special attention to benzodiazepines, antipsychotics,
antidepressants, corticosteroids, and other medication with known psychiatric
side effect (such as voriconazole).
Background summary
During hospitalisation the sleep/wake cycle is frequently disturbed. Possibly,
dynamic lightening can positively influence the sleep/wake cycle. The study
will be conducted by the Erasmus MC and TNO. It is part of the Strategic
Alliance 2010-2013 to develop innovative knowledge in order to create a safe,
sustainable and attractive health care environment. The results of this study
can be used in the future hospital building of the Erasmus MC, Rotterdam, The
Netherlands. The findings will also contribute to the body of knowledge on
hospital design in general.
Study objective
To evaluate the influence of dynamic light on the disturbance of the
rest-activity rhythm of patients admitted to the haematology ward of the
Erasmus MC- Daniel den Hoed Cancer Centre.
The results of the study can possibly be used in the future hospital building
of the Erasmus MC, Rotterdam.
Study design
On the haematology ward of the hospital, 9 single-bed rooms will be equipped
with dynamic light as well as the standard light. The randomization will lead
to dynamic light or standard light being used during stay in the hospital. The
chance is 50% that patient will randomized in one of the groups.
Intervention
Participating patients will be randomized to dynamic light or standard light.
-Continuous: actigraphy by Actiwatch
-Questionnaire at start, daily, weekly and eat the end of the study
