Background summary
Every year more than 100.000 surgeries with complete anaesthesia are performed
in children younger than age 10. Little is known about the post-operative
effects of anaesthesia on cognitive functioning in the developing brain.
Study objective
The aim of this study is to increase knowledge about the effects of anaesthesia
one day after surgery in young children.
Study design
Children planned for an urological operation perform some tasks on visual
perception at the department 'Dromedaris' (Wilhelmina Kinder Ziekenhuis),
directly before the operation and directly after the operation they perform
these tasks again.
Study burden and risks
The burden for the child is a time investment of 15 minutes for each session,
the willingness to wear the electrodes and to perform some simple
computergame-like tasks.

Inclusion criteria
Children aged 4 to 12 years scheduled for an urological operation in daycare surgery in the Wilhelmina Kinderziekenhuis (WKZ) of the UMC Utrecht who receive complete anaesthesia and a regional analgesia (caudal or epidural).
Exclusion criteria
Patients with genetic or congenital syndroms, children who receive special education, children and/or parents who are not fluent in Dutch language and/or patients who are admitted to the hospital overnight. Children who wake up from anesthesia having, according to standard measures, pain, are nauseous, or are restless.
