Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The primary outcome measure will be the survey results.
Secondary outcome
We can improve sexual healthcare in cardiology using the specific targets
patients indicate as necassary.
Background summary
Sexual dysfunction seriously degrades quality of life. The exact prevalence is
not known but sexual dysfunction is reported to effect up to 85% of cardiac
patients. This is due to the shared risk factors that lead to coronary artery
disease and its squellae which is also associated with erectile dysfunction in
men and sexual dysfunction in women. Endothelial dysfunction and side effects
of cardiac medication are other causes for sexual dysfunction in patients with
cardiologic problems. Unfortunately, most cardiologists do not ask their
patients about sexual function.
Study objective
This pilot study is designed to determine the prevalence of female and male
sexual dysfunction in a population of patients visiting outpatient cardiology
clinics in the Netherlands. Furthermore we will determine whether patients
visiting the cardiologist would be interested in receiving help to improve
their sexual health.
Study design
We will perform an anonymous, cross-sectional pilot study, in several
outpatient Cardiology clinics. Patients in these centers will receive our
questionnaire on sexology after their consult, distributed by the secretary.
The secretary will provide the questionnaire with a patient number. The
questionnaire will be accompanied by a letter explaining the objectives of the
study and a permission letter. The questionnaire can be filled in at home.
Patients that are willing to participate can return the questionnaire by mail.
There will be no outside funding for the study.
When our data indicate that more sexual help for cardiac patients is mandatory,
we can include more clinics from Stichting Cardiologie Centra Nederland to
gather more data.
Study burden and risks
Some questions from the questionnaire may provoke emotional stress.
