Background summary
Conversion tremor is a form of conversion disorder as defined by DSM-IV-TR
criteria. Symptoms suggest a medical condition and are associated with
psychological factors. The symptom is not intentionally produced. It is well
documented that psychogenic symptoms are accompanied by a high incidence of
psychological symptoms and insufficient use of active coping strategies (M.
Beilen van, Griffioen, & Leenders, 2009).
Previous research suggests that decreased activity in the precuneus and
supramarginal gyrus are typical for conversion disorder (M. Beilen van, De
Jong, Laar, Gieteling, & Leenders, 2011). We hypothesized that the precuneus
abnormality reflects a general deficit in all types of conversion disorder .
This is the first time that two types of conversion symptoms are compared using
fMRI.
