Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The primary parameter will be the functional score. This will be measured with
the KOOS.
Secondary outcome
The secondary parameter will be the difference in prevalence of complications
(periprosthetic fracture, patella infera, infection, component loosening and
re-operations) between the index and the control group. Besides that we compare
the range of motion, duration of tourniquet time, blood loss and the need to do
a release of the joint capsule.
Background summary
A valgus opening wedge High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO) is a relatively new
technique to perform a correction of the mechanical alignment of the knee in
patients with medial osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. The goal of a valgus HTO
is to prevent or postpone the need for a Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) as long
as possible. Nevertheless, the majority of patients need a TKA after HTO. A
little is known about the effects of an opening wedge HTO to a TKA. It is
important to determine the influence of an opening wedge HTO on the results of
a TKA.
Study objective
To study the influence of a prior opening wedge HTO on the results of a TKA.
Study design
Matched case-control study.
Study burden and risks
The burden is primarily time (outpatient clinic visit and questionnaires) and
radiation (three radiographs; whole leg radiograph, lateral and anteroposterior
view of the knee). Travel allowance will be offered to the participants.

Inclusion criteria
All patients who underwent opening wedge high tibial osteotomy prior to total knee arthroplasty will be asked to participate in the index group. The control group will exist of patients who underwent primary total knee arthroplasty.
Exclusion criteria
Patients who underwent revision surgery of the total knee arthroplasty and patients with insufficient command of Dutch language would be excluded from this study.
