Outcome measures
Primary outcome
EEG and eye-movement parameters which reflects various aspects of social
cognition and perceptual processing. Social behaviors during parent-child
interaction.
Secondary outcome
stability of EEG, eye-movement parameters and social measurements in infants
and toddlers.
Background summary
In last few years it has become clear that the processing of socially relevant
stimuli is dependent on visual perception. In a number of studies in children,
we have demonstrated that impaired perceptual development is associated with a
disruption in social stimulus processing. This is a potential cause of problems
in social behavior, such as by autism. However, to get more insight in the
relationship between visual perception and social behavior more research on
these processes is needed in the very early development, namely in the infant
and toddler age.
Study objective
The main objective of the study is to investigate the development of and
relationship between visual perception and social behavior in infants and
toddlers. Secondly, the the stability of measurements in infants and toddlers
will be investigated.
Study design
An observational non-invasive study. During the presentation of meaningless and
social stimuli, looking behavior and electrical brain activity is recorded. In
addition, during a (partially structured) play situation the parent-child
interaction is videotaped.
Study burden and risks
Children and parents themselves do not benefit from the research. The risk of
participation for the children is negligible and the load is low (a measurement
time up to 5 periods of 15 minutes). The research is group-related, meaning
that the research question cannot be answered without the participation of
children in this age range.
