Outcome measures
Primary outcome
We aim to increase insight in social functioning following burns. We expect to
describe the extent of the problem in three areas of functioning and to
identify risk factors that impair functioning in the three social areas.
Secondary outcome
We hypothesize a significant role of the partner in social functioning. We will
ask the partner to fill in questionnaires at the respective measurements. We
hypothesize that overprotecting partners or partners that react indifferently
may influence social outcome unfavourably.
Background summary
Deep dermal burns cause lifelong scarring. Living with scars in Western society
that highly values physical attractiveness, can be a challenging task. Scars
can hamper intimate relationships, can evoke public reactions and play a role
in return to work and satisfaction with work. Thus far, there is a paucity of
studies investigating social problems.
Study objective
The aim of this study is to examine how many persons with burns experience
problems in different social areas, and which factors prospectively impact on
functioning. Predictors that will be investigated in this population relate to
invalidation, fatigue, psychological problems, and coping strategies. Besides
these general factors, self-esteem and body-esteeem and scar-related problems
will be investigated in relation to intimacy problems. A specific factor that
may affect work-related satisfaction is perceived responsibility for the
accident.
Study design
Prospective cohort study with repeated self-reported measurements.
Study burden and risks
We estimate that patients require about 45 minutes to complete the
questionnaires, whereas the partner is estimated to need 20 to 30 minutes to
fill in the questionnaires.
