Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Matched percentage of the recommended vaccinations or other prophylactic
therapies (by the LCR-guidelines and the national vaccination program) and the
received vaccinations as reported by the family members, as proven by the
stamp/signs in the vaccination booklet and as proven by the antibodies in the
blood. And the correlation with participants characteristics.
Secondary outcome
Secondary study parameters are:
(1) Serologic antibody response
(2) Illness during or short after returning home from international travel
Background summary
Although vaccines are widely available in the Netherlands, the quality of
vaccination status in the Netherlands seems relatively low, especially for
travelling vaccinations. We assume a discrepancy of 20 percent in Dutch
families between the vaccination guidelines and the vaccination status.
Study objective
In this study we want to assess the quality of vaccination status in Dutch
families after travel and compare how well they are protected against
infectious diseases as prescribed by national vaccination protocols
Secondary, we want to study the preventive medication for travelling, the
quality of pre-travel advices regarding infectious diseases, the amount of
preventable illnesses and the awareness of the vaccination status.
Study design
Cross sectional survey
Study burden and risks
Participants will be charged with the informed consent procedure and sending
this back. Afterwards an appointment at school will be planned, for the
questionnaire, a copy of the vaccination booklet and a minimal invasive
fingerprick for the dry blood spot.
Patient*s benefit can possibly be the awareness of their vaccination status. No
financial compensation is offered during the study.
