Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The primary study parameters are the development of growth trajectories,
cardiovascular health, metabolic health, psychosocial health and cognition.
Secondary outcome
Important themes related to these outcomes are nutrition, environmental
factors, physical fitness and activity, sedentary behaviour, sleep behaviour
and genetic predisposition.
Background summary
The ABCD - Amsterdam Born Children and their Development - study is a
longitudinal multi-ethnic birth cohort examining the association between
maternal lifestyle, medical, psychosocial and environmental conditions during
pregnancy and children*s health at birth as well as in later life. Specific
attention is paid to ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in child health and
development. The ABCD-study was established in 2003 to increase our knowledge
in health inequalities and related determinants from the earliest age onwards.
After years of extensive data collection, the children participating in the
ABCD-study are now 11-12 years old. The last major data collection period was
at the age of 5-6 years. To continue our study, we wish to collect data on
physical measurements including anthropometry, cardiovascular function,
physical fitness, metabolic profile and genetic predisposition. The age of
11-12 years is important in child development because at this age, children are
in the pre-pubertal stage.
Study objective
Objectives of phase 4 of the ABCD-study are
(i) to follow-up on growth trajectories during childhood and identify
lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that influence these
trajectories;
(ii) to follow-up on cardiometabolic health during childhood and identify
lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that influence this;
(iii) to follow-up on psychosocial health during childhood and identify
lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that influence this;
(iv) to follow-up on cognitive development during childhood and identify
lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors that influence this;
(v) to identity ethnic and socioeconomic differences in the above stated
associations
Study design
The ABCD-study is a multi-ethnic prospective birth cohort study.
Study burden and risks
The current study is an observational study and therefore no adverse/serious
adverse events are expected. There is no direct benefit of this study to the
participants. The participants will participate in a health check-up where
blood samples will be collected. Other tests will be non-invasive, including
measurements of anthropometry, physical fitness and cardiovascular function.
Moreover during one week physical activity and sleep patterns will be monitored
with an accelerometer. The risks involved in these measurements are negligible
and the burden is minimal. The measurements were conducted when the children
were 5-6 years of age. Long-term follow-up and data analysis is only possible
if measurements are repeated during childhood in a standardised way.

Inclusion criteria
Singleton children whose mothers were recruited in Amsterdam during their pregnancy. These children must have been a participant in the initial study population of the ABCD-study.;Biological parents of these children.
Exclusion criteria
Children born to mother*s who did not participate in the ABCD-study during phase 1. Additionally, of the children born to mother*s who did participate in the ABCD-study, all multiples and those whose parents do not give informed consent for the health check will be excluded. Additionally those children who do not give consent will be excluded.;Parents of the children, who are not the biological parents.
