Background summary
According to the literature, the psychosocial development of a child is highly
influenced by his interaction with the family. Therefore, when childhood cancer
occurs, family members represent the most proximal contextual influence in how
the illness is tackled. During the treatment of the child, families can become
dysfunctional and experience discomfort when they are not supported adequately.
Thus, according to the Development Oriented Care approach introduced in the new
Prinses Máxima Centrum and the willingness to address the unspoken needs of
those families in an innovative way, a multidisciplinary research project is
presented. This overarching project named Meedoen=Groeien! is the result of
the collaboration between the Revalidatiefonds, the Prinses Máxima Centrum and
Delft University of Technology. The project aims to foster the psychosocial and
physical development of the children affected by cancer through the use of new
interactive products designed for them and their families. Specifically the
branch of research that is addressing the psychosocial development of the
children has generated research prototypes that will be proposed for:
*Stimulating communication within families with a child with cancer: the
possible role of newly designed products* (Het stimuleren van de communicatie
binnen gezinnen met een kind met kanker: de mogelijke rol van nieuw ontworpen
producten).
Study objective
The research project focuses on understanding how interactive products can
empower families to maintain a normal family life during disruptive life
events, such as childhood cancer. The primary objective of the pilot-study,
concerns the initial understanding of the effects of the use of interactive
prototypes on stimulating open communication and optimism in the everyday life
of families dealing with childhood cancer. The goal is to collect data on how
those families experience having the proposed prototypes in their homes, how
the prototypes influence their routines, what they like and dislike about the
prototypes, and what they would like to change about them. Collecting this data
will help in refining the purpose and the embodiment of the prototypes in order
to help these families.
Study design
The pilot-study will include one week of use of the prototype(s) after which a
single group semi-structured interview will be held. The *introduction phase*
will happen in the hospital and the *use phase* and the *interview* will be
organised in the families* homes. The interview will last for 90 minutes and
will be divided into four parts (see description CHAPTER 3).
For the study two interactive prototypes (see description CHAPTER 6) will be
used:
-prototype 1: AscoltaMe (designed for children between 6 and 10 years old) aims
to empower children with cancer and their families by stimulating them to
communicate more openly.
-prototype 2: Mr.V (designed for children between 10 and 16 years old) aims at
empowering children with cancer and their families by stimulating optimism
through convivial activities.
Study burden and risks
The foreseeable risks are related to the possibility of touching upon emotional
matters during the interview and the necessity to follow hygienic clinical
standards when cleaning the prototypes. This is necessary because the
prototypes will be move from one family to another during the study process.

Inclusion criteria
In order to be eligible to participate in this pilot-study, the following criteria have to be meet: ;-The families we want to invite for our study, need to be interested in trying out new interactive prototypes;
-The patients should be currently under treatment and aged:
between 6 and 10 years old to interact with AscoltaMe;
between 10 and 16 years old to interact with Mr.V;
-In the study we will include families (parents and siblings) with patients under treatment for leukaemia or solid tumours (siblings can be in the same age range of the patients or also be younger then 6 years old/ older then 16 years old);
-However, the patients in treatment must present a stable/low risk protocol treatment and they must not be hospitalized in the week when the study with the prototype will be scheduled;
-Only Dutch-speaking families will be asked to participate, therefore an understanding of the English language will not be necessary.
Exclusion criteria
Any of the following criteria will be reason for exclusion from participation in this pilot-study:;-Patients in treatment (and family of the patients) with a high risk protocol treatment;
-Hospitalized patients ( or scheduled to be hospitalized in the week selected for the pilot-study);
