Background summary
Atopic dermatitis is an immune-mediated disease in which proinflammatory
protein mediators, released by skin cells/infiltrating cells, and a defect in
the stratum corneum are intrinsic to the characteristics of the disease. It may
be possible to treat atopic dermatitis using drugs aimed at preventing the
synthesis of such mediators.
Study objective
The aim of the project is to gain more insight of the OX40/OX40L expression
patterns in atopic dermatitis. This information can be used to adapt the design
of subsequent in vitro/ in vivo research, clinical research, but also the
development of the medicine targeted to OX40/OX40L.
Study design
Lesional and non-lesional skin biopsies of 3 mm in diameter and blood from
volunteers with atopic dermatitis will be investigated for differences in
OX40/OX40L expression.
Study burden and risks
The health risks associated with taking skin biopsies are small. It is possible
to obtain a slight scar formation and/or discolouration at the site of the
biopsy punch.
