Primary outcome
The one-year graft survival of a second kidney transplant compared to a first
kidney transplant.
Secondary outcome
1. The five- and ten-year graft survival of a second kidney transplantation
2. The one-year patient survival after a second kidney transplantation
Background summary
Kidney transplantation has become the most preferred form of treatment for kidney failure. Currently, around 1 million people in the United States are suffering from kidney failure. Annually, an approximate number of 15,000 kidney transplantations are performed in the United States. As a result of improvements in all aspects of kidney transplantation in the past few decades, the allograft survival has been increased. Unfortunately, in some cases a second transplantation is necessary. A second kidney transplantation could have a decreased allograft survival since this group has already been exposed to alloantigens and thereby has experienced loss of their first graft. Nevertheless, the success rates of second kidney transplantations after a first graft was lost (especially early after transplantation) is not completely known. We want to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the graft survival of a second kidney transplantation compared to a first kidney transplantation in adults (> 18 years) We want to search PubMed for studies that examined the graft survival of a second kidney transplant in recipients > 18 years and complied our eligibility criteria. Our primary outcome is the one-year graft survival of a second kidney transplant compared to a first kidney transplant. Results are reported with an Odds Ratio (OR), using a random effects model from Cochrane Statistical Package Review Manager 5.3.
Study objective
The one-year graft survival of a second kidney transplant will be inferior to the one-year graft survival of a first kidney transplant.
