Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The prevalence of hypomagnesaemia in hospitalised patients using a PPI in a geriatric ward
Secondary outcome
The secondary outcome will be risk factors which will be presented as odd ratios with corresponding 95% confidence interval
Background summary
PPIs are prescribed very frequently and might cause potentially severe hypomagnesaemia. We will carry out a study focussing on the prevalence of hypomagnesaemia in geriatric inpatients using PPI and evaluated risk factors contributing to this effect. Mortality and length of hospital admission were also explored.
METHODS: This observational, retrospective cohort study was designed to examine the association between PPI and hypomagnesaemia in geriatric inpatients, identify independent predictors for proton-pump-inhibitor-induced hypomagnesaemia (PPIIH) and explore its effects on mortality and length of hospital admission.

Inclusion criteria
- Admission in the geriatric ward in Jeroen Bosch Hospital between August 1st, 2014 and April 30th, 2017. This start date was chosen because since then magnesium was included in the regular laboratory examination.
- Magnesium serum levels determined in venous blood must be known.
- Medication prescribed before and during admission must be known.
Exclusion criteria
- Age below 65 years.
- Patients with re-admissions, since all patients are included once in this research.
