Background summary
In the Netherlands, routine clinical and radiological examination are advised at six to twelve weeks, one year and five years after THA and TKA. However, a previous survey showed that almost half of the orthopaedic surgeons did not follow the Dutch recommendations for the routine follow-up. Also the vision of the orthopaedic surgeons on the routine follow-up varies extremely. Besides the view of the orthopaedic surgeon it is important to take the opinion of the care receiver into account. Currently it is unclear to what degree patients are satisfied with the current approach of follow-up.
The aim of this study is to get more insight in the perspective of the patients about their need for follow-up. In this study, we will perform a survey, which could provide more insight in the needs of patients regarding follow-up after THA or TKA. We believe that the results of this study may be useful in the development of new guidelines and will provide a framework to discuss follow-up in clinical practice with policy makers, patients and physicians, and thereby ultimately improve care for THA and TKA patients.
