Parents’ experiences with daily use of a stander in children with cerebral palsy to prevent hip dislocation (prescription: standing in a stander for two times a day 30-45 minutes (total 60-90 minutes per day), 6 days a week, with 10-30 degrees of abduction of each leg)

Background summary
Rationale: Hip displacement is common in children with cerebral palsy and can progress to hip dislocation. The natural risk for hip dislocation is estimated between 15% and 20%. Hip dislocation often occurs at a young age. Therefore, management of hip surveillance must be early to be effective in reducing the risk for hip dislocation. Evidence for conservative interventions is limited. Results of some studies indicate that daily standing in abduction for 60-90 minutes per day positively affects the hip stability. It may, however, be very challenging for parents and children to persist. Previous studies have indeed shown that adherence is not optimal.
objective: To gain insight in parents’ experiences with daily use of a stander in young children with cerebral palsy to prevent hip dislocation. In addition, to identify barriers and facilitators to improve future adherence of the daily use of the stander.
study design: qualitative study design, with semi-structured interviews
study population: parents of young children with cerebral palsy with experience of daily use of a stander to prevent hip dislocation

Study objective
Semi-structured interview study to get insight in parents’ experiences of daily use of a stander in young children with cerebral palsy to prevent hip dislocation. In addition, data will be used to identify barriers and facilitators to improve future adherence of the daily use of the stander.

Inclusion criteria
Parents of young children with Cerebral palsy; Children are aged between 1-6 years, preferable with an GMFCS level III, IV or V; Stander has been prescribed for at least half a year before conduction of the interview. Parents should have sufficient command of the Dutch language to understand and respond to the interview questions
