Background summary
Objective: to study effects and costs of a three-steps collaborative stepped care intervention versus Care As Usual for patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder (PD) in primary care in 40 general practitioner (GP) practices.
Study objective
Collaborative stepped care for anxiety disorders in primary care is cost effective compared with Care As Usual.
Study design
Baseline assessment and follow up after 3, 6, 9 and 12 months.
Intervention
Collaborative stepped care in the primary care setting.

Inclusion criteria
Patients in the primary care setting who fulfill DSM-IV criteria for GAD or PD.
Exclusion criteria
1. Psychosis;
2. suicidality;
3. dementia;
4. other severe cognitive problems.
