Outcome measures
Primary outcome
1) Self-esteem will be measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale
2) Self-perceived competence will be measured using the Competentiebelevingsschaal (Self-perceived Competence Scale)
Secondary outcome
1) Depression symptoms will be measured using the Children’s Depression Inventory (CDI)
2) Anxiety symptoms will be measured using the X
3) Behavior problems will be measured using the Strenghts and Difficulties Questionnaire
Background summary
This study aims to investigate the effect of Competitive Memory Training (COMET) on self-esteem, anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms and behavior problems in youth with ASD using a randomized clinical trial.
Study objective
Competitive Memory Training (COMET) will improve self-esteem, anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms and behavior problems in youth with ASD.
Study design
T0: Just before therapy
T1: After 7 weeks of treatment (Either COMET or TAU)
T2: After 7 weeks of treatment (the other treatment than before T1)
Intervention
7 weekly sessions of Competitive Memory Training (COMET) vs 7 weeks Treatment As Usual.
Inclusion criteria
1) Be between 8 and 16 years old;
2) Have a prior ASD diagnosis;
3) A confirmed ASD diagnosis on the Social Responsiveness Scale;
4) a full scale IQ >80 measured by the short version of the Dutch Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children;
5) The child or parents articulate that the child has low self-esteem.
Exclusion criteria
1) Mood disorder with a risk of suicide;
2) Prevailing trauma;
3) Specific low self-esteem is realistic (e.g. obese child has negative thoughts on his/her weight)
