Background summary
The proposed research project concerns an effectiveness study of the 'Hold me Tight' program for groups of couples based on Emotionaly Focused Therapy (EFT) as developed by Johnson (2008). Hold me Tight is a protocolized program supervised by an EFT trained practitioner for groups of approximately 5 couples. Guided by the accompanying book and video couples develop communication and coping skills in dealing with reciprocal attachment-related vulnerabilities in 8 weekly sessions.
Study objective
It is the aim of the Netherlands Hold me Tight (HmT-NL) study to evaluate effects of 'Hold me Tight', an Emotion Focused Therapy-based relationship enhancement program for groups of couples
versus a waitinglist period on relational distress and mental health complaints.
Study design
The study is based on a within-subjects design (waiting period, intervention and follow-up) in which subjects serve as their own controls. Assessments occur on the following time points:
- prior to the waiting period of 6 weeks
- pre-treatment
- post-treatment (8 weeks later)
- follow-up 1 (after 2 weeks)
- follow-up 2 (after 12 weeks)
- during the intervention weekly measurements are done regarding several potential moderators
Intervention
The protocolized intervention is based on the official Dutch translation of the Hold me Tight program which was developed by Dr. S. Johnson in Canada. The program in this study will be provided by EFT therapists. Adherence to the protocol will be evaluated by examining random therapy excerpts by independent raters guided by structured checklists. During the 8 weekly 2 hour sessions the following themes are covered by the program: (1) psycho education about attachment in couples relationships, (2) identification of dysfunctional patterns of interaction (3) identification of reciprocal vulnerabilities underlying dysfunctional interaction, (4) resolving misunderstandings and creating a secure base, (5) open and responsive communication, (6) forgiving and building of trust, (7) touch and sexuality, and (8) relapse prevention.
