Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Language use as measured with audiotapes of first two treatment sessions and coded with a codebook.
Secondary outcome
Pain, anxiety, illness perceptions, therapeutic alliance and physical functioning
Background summary
Results of physiotherapy are partly determined by patients' expectations. Positive expectations can have a favourable influence on the treatment results (placebo effects) and negative expectations can have an unfavourable influence on treatment results (nocebo effects). The information provided by the physiotherapist and the language used by the physiotherapist influences the patients' expectations and might trigger placebo and nocebo effects. Although many physiotherapists recognize the impact of these mechanisms, they do not really know how to deal with this in practice. Therefore, the aim of this study is to test a communication training for physiotherapists to enhance placebo and avoid nocebo effects in the treatment of low back pain.
Study objective
Communication training improves language use of the physiotherapist and at the patients' level self-reported illness perceptions, state anxiety, therapeutic alliance, pain, and functioning.
