Background summary
The study aims to investigate whether suppletion of iodine in patients with COVID-19 disease has a preventive effect on deterioration of symptoms.
Study objective
Treatment with oral iodine prevents deterioration of symptoms in COVID-19 patients admitted to a hospital.
Study design
Inclusion from 23rd of October 2020 till the first of July 2022
Patients will be followed until discharge from the hospital or dead in hospital.
Intervention
Once daily a quarter of a 65 mg potassiumiodine tablet during eight consecutive days
Inclusion criteria
Patients 18 years of age and older, admitted to a hospital and who are tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection, are recruited for the study.
Patiënts must be legally competent and able to read the patient's information letter and sign the informed consent form.
Exclusion criteria
Thyroid disease or treatment, like goiter, thyroidectomy, radioactive iodine, medication related to thyroid dysfunction or the use of Amiodaron.
