Background summary
Abstract:
Background:
Patients who are referred for a bronchoscopy for their diagnosis often experience fear or stress and might not understand or remember all the information provided. This may compromise informed consent. Normally, patient information is provided with written brochures. Recently we started using digital animated information modules with short texts, to provide a better recall of provided information and improve patient satisfaction.
Aim:
To evaluate recall and patient satisfaction with bronchoscopy patient information via digital animated information and written brochures.
Methods:
Patients scheduled for a bronchoscopy received both a written folder and an animated module by email. Knowledge was assessed before studying the material(s) of choice (t0), before the bronchoscopy (t1) and after bronchoscopy (t2). The primary end points were knowledge about bronchoscopic procedure (10-point scale) and overall satisfaction (10-point scale) with the materials provided.
Results:
N = 27 patients participated, of whom 22 and 16 patients used the folder and digital animation respectively. Twelve patients used both. Only one patient did not use any of the provided information. Knowledge improved from t0 to t1, and from t0 to t2 (median scores (min-max) being 6 (4-9), 7 (4-9) and 8 (6-10)), p=0.07 and p <0.01, respectively. Overall satisfaction was high for both the folder and digital animation, medians (min-max) being 8 (6-10) and 8 (8-10), respectively.
Conclusion
Patients are satisfied with both provided materials. Patients used the provided materials, often in combination. Knowledge about the bronchoscopy increased after education, both with written brochures and digital animated information.
Study objective
Pilot Hypothesis: Patient education for a bronchoscopy with animated medical information is superior compared with written information brochures.
Patients who are referred for a bronchoscopy for their diagnosis often experience fear or stress and might not understand or remember all the information provided regarding this procedure. Patient education is provided normally with written brochures, however the use of modern technology with moving animations and short texts might provide a better recall of the information en improve patient satisfaction. Indiveo is a new modern and digital way to inform the patient with animations. This pilot study will investigate the Indiveo patient education compared with written informed bronchures.
