Primary outcome
Carer: Self Rated Burden Scale- VAS, CarerQol-7D; CarerQol-VAS
Person with dementia: Neuro Psychiatric Inventory
Secondary outcome
Carer: experienced health (RAND 36/SF36);
use of facilities and health care,
quality of life (EQ5D), use of psychotropic drugs, depression: Center for Epidemiologic Studies- Depression (CES-D) and anxiety: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, anxiety subscale (HADS-A).
Person with dementia:
Katz index of independence basic activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL); Dementia Quality of life instrument DQI, use of facilities and health care; agitation: Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory- Community: (CMAI-C); severity of dementia: Geriatric Deterioration Scale (GDS-Reisberg); use of psychotropic drugs
Study objective
Is an intensive multimodel multicomponent program for caregivers of people with dementia more effective than care as usual for the well being of the carer and the person with dementia
Study design
base line; 3 months; 6 months
Intervention
7- day residential intensive training of carers of people with dementia. The training is an intensive multi-component and multi-model training comprising psycho-social and psycho educational interventions and training of practical skills. Parallel to this training their partners with dementia receive an own program with therapeutic components and pleasant activities.
The control group will receive care as usual.
Inclusion criteria
Couples of caregiver and person with dementia living together
Person with dementia: diagnosis dementia, understanding and speaking Dutch
Caregivers: understanding and speaking Dutch
Exclusion criteria
Person with dementia: agressive behaviour or wandering
