Intervention
Outcome measures
Primary outcome
Prostate cancer mortality compared between the screened and the non-screened group of men at risk.
Secondary outcome
1. Progression-free (tumor free) survival;
2. Survival free of metastatic disease;
3. Quality of life in the screened and non-screened populations.
Background summary
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in Western Europe and the United States.
To study whether the effect of early detection and treatment of prostate cancer may reduce the disease-specific mortality a randomized trial is initiated in Europe.
The "European Randomized study of Screening for Prostate Cancer" is a major European effort with 8 participating countries. The study has a co-operation with the Prostate Lung Colonrectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial in the US.
This study should result in advice to governments around the world as to whether screening for prostate cancer should be a part of the general provision of health care to our populations.
Study objective
Screening causes a difference in prostate cancer mortality of 20% or more.
Intervention
PSA determination followed by DRE and prostate biopsy if PSA >= 3.

Inclusion criteria
Males aging 55-74 (including age 74).
Exclusion criteria
Previous diagnosis of prostate cancer.
