Background summary
Although it is known that children can develop serious psychosocial and somatic
complaints due to a traumatic event, still little research has been done to
study exposure and posttraumatic reactions in children in the normal population
(Yule, 2001). Knowledge of experiences and complaints of children in the normal
population is essential in order to develop general knowledge of children and
trauma, a necessary ingredient to good prevention and treatment practices.
Study objective
Central research questions in this study are:
1) To what extent are elementary school children exposed to traumatic events?
2) What type events did these children experience (e.g. accidents, acts of
violence, severe disease, death of a loved one)?
3) To what extent do children who are exposed to a traumatic event develop
posttraumatic reactions?
4) To what extent do differences in exposure and complaints correlate with age,
sex, and type of event?
Study design
150 elementary schools in the province of Utrecht will be contacted by letter
in order to ask whether they will participate in this study (the sample will be
aselect). Interested boards of schools will be seen in order to inform them
concerning the study, children who survive traumatic events, and the
possibilities of the Psychotraumacentre. When a board consents in participation
the parents of the children will be sent a lettre with the same information and
question whether they agree to let their child fill in some questionnaires.
Children who are included in the study will fill in the questionnaires during
school (in class) during half an hour.
Study burden and risks
In order to gain knowledge on elementary school children it is inevitable to
question the children themselves, which means that a sudden burden is
inevitable too. The burden and risk of this study are considered acceptable.
While it is possible that the number of complaints increase due to the
questions of the measures, this is not considered probable. When children do
develop complaints however, they can receive free and rapid treatment form the
Psychotraumacentre.
