Outcome measures
Primary outcome
The primary variable of outcome will be the Barthel Index, the Action research
Arm test and the Functional Ambulation Categories.

Background summary
Early prediction of functional outcome is paramount to determine treatment
policies and discharge planning in patients with acute stroke. The accuracy of
early prediction after stroke is unknown. On the other hand, there are strong
indications that an early start of rehabilitation intervention will improve
outcome of gait, dexterity and ADL.
At this moment physiotherapists are unware which factors significantly are
associated with functional outcome after stroke. In addition it is unknown at
which moment prediction of functional outcome can be optimally determined after
stroke onset.
Study objective
The present cohort study is aimed to investigate the accuracy of making early
prognosis of functional outcome of the upper paretic limb, walking ability and
activities of daily living in patients with an acute ischemic or hemorrhagic
stroke.
Study design
The present study is a prospective cohort study in patients with a first-ever
ischemic stroke. In a repeated measurment design, patients will be assessed 3
times a week starting within the first 72 hours after stroke onset.
Final assessment will be executed after 3 months post stroke

No neurological deficits after 24 ours (Diagnosis Transient ischemic attack)
