Background summary
The AGE (Advanced Glycation Endproducts) reader is a noninvasive device based
on autofluorescense of the skin. AGE reflects metabolic and oxidative stress.
Research showed that AGE is a predictor of complications in diabetic patients
and in patients with nephropathy. Until now, the relation between AGE and
severity of pulmonary disease has not been studied. In addition, there may be a
relation between AGE and number of packyears without decline in lungfunction.
Therefore in this study we want to investigate the association between AGE,
COPD severity and number of packyears. In future AGE may be helpful as
predictor of morbidity and mortality in patients with COPD.
