Background summary
Since 1984 the research department of the Municipal Health Service of Amsterdam
focuses on research on HIV/AIDS, bloodborne and sexually transmitted diseases
and (HIV) related infections in homosexual men. This protocol is admitted to
broaden and replace all preceding protocols on this cohort of homosexual men,
approved by the Medical Ethics Board of the AMC and the MHS Amsterdam.
Study objective
To answer questions on/ test hypothesis on:
- The incidence and prevalence of HIV/AIDS and other bloodborne or sexually
transmitted diseases and (HIV) related infections.
- The (natural) course, the (moleculair) epidemiology, pathogenesis and the
effect of treatment in HIV infections and (HIV) related infections.
- The (natural) course, the (moleculair) epidemiology, pathogenesis and
treatment of other bloodborne and sexually transmitted diseases and (HIV)
related infections
- The risk factors, including behaviour, for and spread of bloodborne and
sexually transmitted diseases and HIV and (HIV) related infections.
- Immunological and virological markers of bloodborne and sexually transmitted
diseases and HIV and (HIV) related infections.
- genetic background of participants and the relation between genetic markers
and sensitivity to viral infections and the clinical course of infections.
Study design
Open, observational cohort study in homosexual men/ men having sex with men
Study burden and risks
Participating in the ACS of homosexual men does not have any consequential
risks for the participant.
Once every six months participants will fill out questionnaires (30-45 minutes)
HIV-positive men will be asked to donate blood every three months
HIV-negative men will be asked to donate blood every six months
Dependent on the objective of research participants will be asked to donate
other body-tissue-samples
