Background summary
A therapy which is being offered in rehabilitation center Leijpark is a
mindfulness training for people with chronic pain. Participants learn to act
mindful in stressfull situations and handle their thoughts and feelings in a
functional way. Research shows that mindfulness trainings improves the quality
of life for several populations of patients and relatively healthy individuals.
Several psychological processes influence disabilities due to chronic pain.
Acceptance of pain (pay little attention to unsuccesful attempts to avoid or
control pain and in stead focus on participation in valuable activities and to
attempt reaching important personal goals) is a succesful strategy to improve
wellness. A mindfulness training is very suitable to accomplish a higher level
of acceptance. Preliminary experiences in Leijpark are positive. This research
is being proposed to test if the participants experience a better health
condition after a mindfulness training.
Study objective
The goal of the research is to extend knowledge for people with chronic pain by
testing the following hypotheses:
Hypothesis 1: After a mindfulness training participants score higher in
mindfulness as tested with the MAAS than before the training.
Hypothesis 2a: After a mindfulness training participants score higher in
acceptance as tested with the MAAS than befoer the training.
Hypothesis 2b: After a mindfulness training participants show less pain
catastrophizing than before the training.
Hypothesis 3a: After a mindfulness training participants experience less pain
than before the training.
Hypothesis 3b: After a mindfulness training participants are in bettter health
than before the training.
Hypothesis 3c: After a mindfulness training participants experience less
influence of pain on daily functioning.
Hypothesis 3d: After a mindfulness training participants experience more
satisfaction with life than before the training.
The long term (1 months) effects are being tested of the aspects mentioned
(mindfulness, acceptance, pain-catastrophizing, pain sensation, health, daily
functioning, quality of life).
Study design
The effects of the mindfulness training are being determined by having the
participants fill out questionnaires before and after the 8 week training.
Controldata are being collected by having the participants fill out a
questionnaire 4 weeks before they start the training. The long term effect is
being determined by having the participants fill out questionnaires 1 months
after finishing the training. The starting point for collecting data is to
avoid unacceptable waiting periods for the patients to start their training.
Every participant fills out the questionnaire 5 times.
Intervention
The intervention is the mindfulness training that is already being given in
Leijpark. This training is based on the programs of Kabat-Zinn and Segal,
Williams and Teasdale. The participants have 8 weekly group sessions and learn
meditation techniques. They also practice to do daily routines in a mindfuln
way. An important part is to perceive thoughts and feelings about bodily
sensations in a different, more functional way. The participants het homework,
which takes about 45 minutes per day.
Study burden and risks
The participants will have to fill out a questionnaire 5 times, which will take
about 45 minutes per session.

Inclusion criteria
Criteria are when patients have problems with determining their limits, with acceptance of pain complaints of when the patient feels stressed. Because the succesfulness of the training is dependent on the willingness of the patient to practice at home, the patient has to decide himself if he participates in the training. The age of the patient is 18 years or older.
Exclusion criteria
serious psychiatric problems
abuse of alcohol or drugs
not willing to practice for 45 minutes every day
