Outcome measures
Primary outcome
What is the function of the masticatory system after a high (partial)
condylectomy in patients with a unilateral condylar hyperactivity? This will be
investigated by manual assessment of the function of the TMJ.
Secondary outcome
Subjective evaluation of TMJ function will be assessed by means of a
questionaire
Background summary
Unilateral Condylar Hyperactivity (UCH) is characterized by an asymmetrical
development of the lower jaw based on unilateral growth of the mandibular
condyle. If clinical progression of the asymmetry is based on a hyperactive
condylar growth center, a high partial condylectomy can be performed to
eliminate the growth site. Many surgeons are hesitant when it comes to
performing a condylectomy because of the assumed high morbidity and disfunction
of the temporomandibular joint. These assumtions are not evidence based and our
experience with a relatively large patientgroup is that the morbidity is low,
without any major setback in function. We would like to evaluate our
postoperative patientgroup by means of manual function tests as well as a
questionaire.

Study design
Observational research, retrospective, patient-control study
Study burden and risks
The burden is minimal and consists of manual assessment of the TMJ function (30
minutes) and filling out a questionaire (30 minutes).
