Background summary
MATE is a so called *front door* screening instrument. MATE is administered
during the first contact with the patient. The information gathered by
administering the MATE is used to assess the nature and gravity of the patients
problems. Based on this assessment the treatment best suited to the patients
individual situation can be determined.
MATE consists of 10 different questionnaires of which 9 are evaluated by
Tactus, in association with The Amsterdam Institute for Addiction Research
(AIAR). The questionnaire that hasn*t been validated yet is the SAPAS.
(Standardised Assesment of Personality Abbreviated Scale). The purpose of the
SAPAS is to screen for personality disorders. Screening and diagnostics on
personality disorders among patients with addiction problems is of great
importance, while a personality disorder is determinative for the intensity of
care that will be recommended.
In addition, there hasn't been any reseach done which included the sensitivity
and specificity of the MATE concerning the detection of ADHD, ASS and
Alexithymia. One of the questionnaires from the original MATE, the HADS
(Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) has been replaced by the DASS, because
the HADS didn't seemed to be public domain. Therefore, another purpose of this
study is to determine whether this instrument is able to detect psychiatric
disorders on axis 1.
In summary the research will consist of the following 5 goals:
1) Validation of the MATE detecting Personality Disorders (SAPAS).
2) Validation of the MATE detecting ADHD.
3) Validation of the MATE detecting Autistic Disorders (ASS)
4) Validation of the MATE detecting psychiatric disorders on axis 1, other then
the ones mentioned earlier.
5) Determine the prevalence of psychiatric disorders on axis 1, personality
disorders on axis 2 and alexithymia.
