Intervention
Outcome measures
Primary outcome
To study the effectiveness of the intervention, participants answer
questionnaires about depressive symptoms, anxious symptoms, quality of life,
and self-esteem.
Secondary outcome
Predictors are: worrying, sense of control, social anxious symptoms, alcohol-
and druguse, peer relationships, disfunctional cognitions, problem-solving
skills, and emotion regulation.
Background summary
Depression and anxiety are very common mental disorders in adolescence, which
makes it important to prevent or postpone the onset of these, often first
incidence, disorders. A difficulty in this respect is that adolescents often do
not seek treatment for mental health problems. The Internet has been proven to
be an acceptable medium for adolescents through which they tend to seek help
for emotional problems.
Study objective
Hypothesis: the Internet guided self-help intervention is effective in reducing
depressive and anxiety symptoms in adolescents compared to a waiting-list
control group.
Study design
The effects of the intervention will be studied in a randomized controlled
trial. Adolescents are randomized to the intervention or wait-list control
group. Participants in the control group receive information about depression
and anxiety through a website for adolescents. They are able to attend the
intervention after the second follow-up (4 months after the start of the
intervention).
Intervention
Adolescents receive a web-based self-help intervention which is based on
problem solving and self-examination therapy for adults. The intervention will
be adapted for use with adolescents. Adolescents will make a list of what is
important in their life, after which they are asked to categorise three
distinct categories, namely: not important or relevant, important and solvable,
important but not solvable. For each category, the procedure will be explained
after which participants work through their problems step by step.
Study burden and risks
Burden: adolescents are asked to fill in questionnaires at five different
occasions. The completion of one set of questionnaires on one occasion will
take about 30 minutes.
