This study aims to determine whether variations in genes encoding the most important components of the innate immune system (gene polymorphisms), play a role in the susceptibility to recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis.

Primary outcome
Presence of polymorphisms in the genes of the innate immune system, that are
involved in the host defense against vulvovaginal Candida infections.
Secondary outcome
Not applicable
Background summary
Vulvovaginal candidiasis is a mucosal infection caused by Candida, which
affects most women at least once during their lifetime. However, some women
have frequently recurrent infections. Environmental factors provide
insufficient explanation for these frequent infections. Previous studies have
shown that genetic variations in the innate immune system can predispose to
recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis. Perhaps this lowers the threshold of the
amount of colonizing candida which causes complaints.
Study objective
This study aims to determine whether variations in genes encoding the most
important components of the innate immune system (gene polymorphisms), play a
role in the susceptibility to recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis.
Study design
Prospective observational multi-center study
Study burden and risks
The burden and risks of this study are very low and consist of filling out a
questionnaire and a single venipuncture.
